Blog Post: Crafting in the Age of Carona

It all begins with an idea.

Ive been making quilts for folks for lots of years. Sometimes it is for a wedding, a new baby, or a memorial quilt in honor of a loved one. Well, since March, 2019 all of my commissioned quilt projects are on hold, and Ive been a mask making maven!

I started out making masks for Hope Hospice in Dublin, CA. Despite the shelter in place order for the rest of us, these awesome staff and volunteers have over a hundred patients to visit in their homes every day! So having fressh cleanable masks is a big priority. The next request I received was from Nurse Barbara at the Magnolia Oakland, a cannabis dispensaryserving the medical and recreational needs of the community. Making themed masks for them was a lot of fun, along with being an important tool so their staff can keep their doors open and the employees safe.

After that, it was just a matter of time before folks who know me asked if they could pay me for making masks, and that was the beginning of the assemblyline of custom masks for folks. Ive been making them nonstop since then and as of today, I have made 333 facemasks and sent them to 15 different states! I never would have imagined, but Ive really enjoyed going through my stash of fabrics and offering up personal choices for people in the colors and themes that they like. I hope to get back to my commissioned pieces soon. I have the Starburst quilt on my work board right now (see works in progress for pictures), and another memorial quilt in the wings.

I look forward to blogginhg and posting pictures as this exciting new way for me to talk to you all gets underway!

All blessings,

Mama Shoshana
